You don’t pay much attention to the garage door when it’s working properly. You just press the button on the clicker and drive in or out of the garage. But what if something goes wrong? Don’t panic or despair. Get a solution right away.
Broken Torsion Spring
This doesn’t happen very often, but the issue is serious. When a spring breaks, the energy stored in it is released so there is a loud bang. The opener won’t be able to lift the door. Manual opening is not a good idea since the cables can get stuck around the rollers. The replacement involves removing the broken pieces and installing the new spring. The new component must have wire size, length and inside diameter corresponding to the size and weight of the door. Its cycle life should be at least 10,000 cycles or preferably 15,000 cycles.
Modern openers have advanced designs and strong and durable components. That is why they can last for as many as ten years and possibly more. However, this doesn’t mean that the risk of issues is eliminated. If the opener makes awful sounds instead of running smoothly as usual, there is a broken gear inside and it has to be replaced as quickly as possible. When the motor gets power, but doesn’t work, it will need full repair or replacement. In very rare cases, the circuit board has failed and has to be changed.
Cable off the Drum
This issue is not particularly common, but it is typically the result of another problem. It may be due to broken spring or roller. The broken component should be replaced before the cable is accurately adjusted. If the cable is frayed or has cuts, it will require replacement too. Less often, the cable could have come off because it has the wrong size or has been installed incorrectly. In the first case, replacement will solve the problem. In the second one, adjustment should be sufficient.
The vertical and horizontal sections may have got misaligned because of loose brackets. After the two sections are adjusted together, the bolts should be tightened to prevent future issues. A bent track requires straightening right away. The sooner it is fixed the less likely it will be to break. If it’s already broken or severely bent, it has to be replaced.
